Pivot Polishing

We offer high quality pivot polishing to members of the trade and hobbyist clock repairers.

Pivot polishing is an essential step in servicing a clock, and ensuring that the clock runs correctly, but its hard to do in an amateur home workshop, and time consuming in a professional workshop where the repairer often uses their lathe for this work which is not without risk and not every pivot is suited to this.

We can polish pivots ranging in size from 0.3-4mm, though larger pivots can be polished but may incur extra costs.

We offer a quick turn around time with work being sent back to you the working day after we receive your items.

For the best service please include for polishing:

  • All wheels (Including minute wheels with pivots)

  • Pallets

  • Hammer

  • Barrel Arbour

Please inspect the item to ensure pivot polishing is suitable. Where pivots require repivoting we can provide quotes for this work. We will not undertake work we feel is not benefitted by the process.

If you would like to send us items to be pivot polished you can print this form here and post them to us (or alternatively please include a note titled Pivot Polishing along with your items that has your name, address, contact details on) to:

It would be helpful if all old oil could be cleaned from the pivots before posting. Items will require cleaning before refitting. We recommend all pivots are polished before bushing the plates.

What many clients do is dismantle several clocks at a time and send us the items that require pivot polishing, we then return these and they can continue with their own repair work. They then send us the next batch of items from disassembled clocks before they have finished overhauling the previous batch of items sent to us. This means they are never waiting for work to return and are always busy in their own workshops.

Many clients send us just the more difficult to polish items (hammer, pallets, centre wheel etc.) or if items are very worn, and we believe we can offer competitive quotes for this work. Please use the contact form to discuss this.

We advise against polishing wheels from contemporary Hermle clocks, as they are plated and polishing wears through the hard plating, instead a leather buffing stick charged with a suitable polish (Autosol Metal Polish) should be used before the pivot is thoroughly cleaned.
